Writer: Dr. Denita ScottDr. Denita Scott

With DSES, you can stay ready through the end of the year. End your school year stronger and more READY than ever! Teaching is a demanding profession, and it’s easy to put yourself last on the priority list. But we’re not letting that happen this February! Take these practical tips to protect your heart, reduce stress, and recharge your energy so you can finish the school year feeling your best.

Take These Tips for a more READY You

  • Check In with Your Health – Schedule your annual check-up, monitor your blood pressure, and keep an eye on your overall health. Prevention is key!

  • Get Moving – You don’t need an extremely intense workout. A brisk walk, light stretching, or even dancing to your favorite song can get your heart pumping and boost your mood. Aim for 20-30 minutes per day.

  • Stay Hydrated & Eat Well – Water is essential for overall well being. Pair it with balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to keep your energy levels steady. Get READY and meal prep! Think about what you’ll eat, prepare multiple meals and package for quick reheat later.

  • Prioritize Sleep – Get READY for Bed! Lack of rest leads to exhaustion, stress, and burnout. Create a bedtime routine and include reducing screen time before bed, and aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep.

  • Do What You Love – You stay READY when you take time for yourself. Bake your favorite dessert, read a book, paint or engage in activities that bring you joy. Your happiness matters!

  • Practice Self-Care Daily – Whether it’s deep breathing, journaling, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, small self-care actions can have a big impact. Need a breathing technique? Try box breathing - in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4.

  • Connect with READY Support – Lean on your colleagues, friends, mentors, or students when you need encouragement. Connect with your therapist or a trusted confidant—you don’t have to do it all alone!

Beat Burnout & Stay READY

Burnout is real, and Patricia Jennings’ book Teacher Burnout Turnaround highlights how stress and lack of support contribute to teacher fatigue. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a step back and assess what’s within your control. Small changes can lead to big improvements in your wellness journey.
